The University of Jos, through the research efforts of the Department of Theriogenology and Production, is actively engaged in addressing methane emissions from indigenous ruminant livestock in Nigeria. Our research emphasizes the integration of genetics and nutritional strategies to achieve sustainable reductions in methane emissions. This includes: Nutritional Strategies: Optimizing feed compositions to reduce enteric methane production while maintaining or improving productivity. Incorporating feed additives that target methane-producing pathways in the rumen to enhance digestive efficiency. Sustainable Livestock Development: Tailoring solutions that align with the unique environmental, social, and economic conditions of tropical livestock systems. Balancing methane mitigation with improved livestock productivity and adaptability in tropical environments. |
