Horn of Africa Regional Environment Centre (HoA-REC) is an autonomous section of Addis Ababa University. Its main responsibility is to advise governmental institutions in the Horn of Africa on environmental issues. HoA-REC has been working with solid waste and landfills in Ethiopia for several years. In 2011, HoA-REC developed the Project Idea Note and the Project Design Document for the UNFCCC’s Clean Development Mechanism project activity at Addis Ababa’s sole landfill, Repi, to be sanitarily covered and produce electricity from landfill gas. The project is the first of its kind in Ethiopia. HoA-REC also has programs associated with renewable energy in households and sustainable agriculture. |
