In recent years scientific research efforts have been put on monitoring and control of non-collected emissions of landfill gas, mainly aimed at reducing greenhouse gases and, in general, the environmental impact of landfills.
Several methods have been proposed in order to quantify landfill gas emissions. They can be roughly classified in direct and indirect techniques. Direct methods are applied by using measurement instruments directly in contact with the landfill surface and include subsurface vertical gradient measurements, dynamic concentration method, and accumulation chamber method. Alternative methods are the indirect ones, also called atmospheric methods. They can be successfully applied provided they are thoroughly validated for the specific case. |
